What is a backup?
A backup is a copy of all your data, stored in a separate location. These are not only good business practice, but they are a form of insurance against the unknown. If the worst happens, the time taken to reinstate the same systems and settings you had before the disruption is minimal and restores you to the same place when your last backup was.
Why do you need a backup?
Data loss can happen for several different reasons:
- Natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods that can severely damage equipment
- Malicious cyber-attacks such a ransomware that can lock you out of your own files until a ransom is paid for a decryption key
- Equipment failure when your server or workstation has failed
- User error where an employee has accidentally moved or deleted files
- Software failure where a patch or update causes system instability
- Our backup solutions are tailored to each individual customer’s requirements. There are two types that interface with most sites and configurations.
Network-attached storage (NAS)
Network-attached storage (NAS) drives are devices that are attached to your network. They ‘talk’ to each one of the workstations on your network. Backing up is automated, scheduled, and saved to the NAS which acts as a vault. It stores all the required information from each device on the network. We can set up a USB hard drive that can be plugged into the NAS and taken offsite at the end of the day to keep the data at a separate location. We can manage this backup system remotely to ensure functional backups are occurring or we can set up alerts to be sent to management if errors do occur. The advantage of this system is there are minimal reoccurring costs and your data is being stored locally. However, it requires the USB to be taken off-site at the end of each day and relies on that happening in order for the backup to be effective.
These backups are programmed to automatically back up to the cloud. This means the copy is securely stored off-site and easily accessible if your physical premises are affected. ProSouth has partnered with several different cloud backup service providers and can offer a range of solutions. We offer offsite cloud backups that are hosted within New Zealand or offshore. In order for cloud backups to work efficiently, we recommend that you have Fibre or at least a VDSL internet connection.
